A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's key government projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this incident,” affirmed the national leader.
The president reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The development of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, defying expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked ongoing questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an prompt suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.
This halt was suggested while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."
In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and operation of these strategic undertakings.
