New research indicates that individuals who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users using these medications must be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to original mass in about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Experts suggest the way of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this medication means hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Condition?
Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Testimonies
People who have stopped the medication describe a intense resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced something activating and you're instantly ravenous," described one woman.
The struggle is worsened if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle management.
